Are Siezures Common In Gerbils?

Seizures in gerbils are quite common, occurring in up to 40% of gerbils.  Gerbil seizures can begin young at 2 months and can worsen by the age of 6 months.  Gerbils can outgrow seizures.

Symptoms of a gerbil seizure: in mild seizures, the gerbil may freeze and twitch.  If a seizure occurs for longer than several minutes, the gerbil could experience brain damage.  Stress of being over handled or being in unfamiliar surroundings can result in seizures.  Gerbil seizures are 100% hereditary.  Thus it is recommended that gerbil's that have a history of seizures do not breed.
