What to manage and prevent?
Kennel Cough is most widely used as a term to generalize upper respiratory problems in dogs. The medical terminology can be related to tracheobronchitis, Bordetellosis, or Bordetella. No matter the actual term, true Kennel Cough is highly contagious in dogs and cats, is found worldwide and is treatable.
Symptoms:
• Dry, harsh, hacking cough that may evolve into retching.
• Some pet owners refer to Kennel Cough as a “honking sound”.
• Watery nasal discharge
• More severe cases: lack of appetite, lethargy, fever, signs of pneumonia.
Generally, the symptoms are mild can last up to 10 days. The contagious phase can last up to 14 weeks. Dogs and Cats “at-risk” with health issues and puppies and kitten run the greatest risk of threat. There is the rare but real potential if not treated properly.
